Sensitivity Reads

Rogan: I like doing sensitivity reads.

I don’t get those jobs super often, and I wouldn’t want them to be my main thing (there’s a reason it’s expensive), but I’ve discovered I really enjoy hearing other people’s ideas and acting as a sounding board to help bring out their best! It makes me happy. The people who hire me bring so much heart and hard work to the table, and they often have really creative ideas that I never would’ve thought of! It’s wonderful when that happens.

There can be a lot of anxiety around sensitivity reading, I think. There’s this image of going to some knowledgeable person who tells you self-righteously how wrong and awful you are. But that’s not how I see it; I see it as a collaboration, me working to help someone do what they’re already doing. We state our hard limits on the webpage, and by the time someone’s gone through all the trouble of reading that, contacting us, and paying me, they’ve taken that into account. (And if they didn’t, it’ll come up long before money’s changed hands.) And if it’s not a hard limit for me, my reaction is generally curiosity and excitement. More multi in the arts! Woo yeah!

I definitely used to be more sanctimonious about this, long before I did this for pay. (Indeed, part of why I CREATED that “hire me” page was, I wanted to stop people from asking me to survey their Jekyll/Hyde murderer multi characters for free. It worked!) But I’ve mellowed as I’ve aged, in large part because I have read enough good multi stuff that I no longer feel that starving urge for Perfection Or Nothing. You don’t need the One Perfect Story when you have a bunch of good enough stories already! I have Paprika, and the Book of Autonomancy, and Mefisto in Onyx, and all the rest of it. I’m no longer culturally starving! (It’s also a nice side effect of Sneak running [community profile] pluralstories.)

I also have more realistic expectations of what fiction can and cannot do in the world. Nobody who has hired me has been a blockbuster creator of the next Sybil. They’re folks who make nice little webcomics or play D&D. They are not responsible for single-handedly removing ableism from our society via the power of story. Come on. They don’t want or need a politically expedient parable of plurality, and neither do I. It’s the friction of our experience and hopes meeting reality that gives stories their charge, that grate of imperfection and frailty that comes with being a being. The agony of the relationships in Pipe Up! make it way more compelling than if the singlet friend was perfectly, utterly accepting right off the bat, or if he was just not worth the emotional investment. But that messiness? Oh man, that messiness makes it POWERFUL.

My job isn’t to remove the mess. It’s to go, “ooooh, you know what would make this mess EVEN STRONGER...”

On the plus side the music playing Real Loud outside right now is recogniseable to me
but on the minus side that means whoever is playing it is probably around my age
and should know better.

I think open windows season has arrived.

Growing impatient, the shogun orders a second group made up of Yamada Asaemon and Iwagakure ninjas to go to Shinsenkyou and find out what happened to the vanguard party. Meanwhile, on the island, the remaining vanguard party members finally regroup and try to figure out their next steps.

Cut for length and spoilers. )

Random stuff:

  • Can’t wait to see more of the additional landing party and their abilities. I find Isuzu and Shugen the most intriguing so far.
  • Jikka being excited to clock out and leave this island 😂 It’s me past 2:00 PM on a weekday.
  • Thank you, animators, for all the moments where Gantetsusai is just in fundoshi and the moments where he takes off his top so I get to see peekaboo glimpses of his hips/thighs because of his hakama. Thank you as well for Shugen’s biceps and Ran’s muscles.
  • Lowkey shipping Eizen/Shugen but not currently motivated to actively search for content.
  • Very glad I stumbled across the ちょびっと!じごくらく! shorts on YouTube! They’re a goldmine for the type of trivia and/or fun facts that inspire fanworks. (Like, what do you mean Fuchi gives all the Yamada Asaemon nicknames because he sees them as family? 😭😭😭)
  • Honestly, Fuchi in general was so cute?? The way his ahoge flicked back-and-forth as he spilled Sagiri's crush, the way he got hyped about getting to study Tensen bodies and Gantetsusai’s new look, the way he kind of skip-hops in lieu of running omggg
  • I can’t find any news re: the air date for S03, but if we’re following the wait time between S01 and S02, we’ll get S03 (probably the final season since the manga’s done) in 2029.

Chapter 1

001-A01:

Inauguration for HAMA's new mayor, Kafka. His surgery and rehabilitation went well. There is some dissent from the people but it goes through. Things are dire so everyone thinks HAMA will go under soon. Kafka's first declaration is that they will no longer be monetarily supporting the metropolitan government?

001-A02:

Kafka explains that he invested in a new travel agency affiliated with HAMA18 called Hama Tours. The profits will be used to financed tourism in HAMA. He got the support of the president of HAMA's biggest bank with all that he owns on the line.

The logo for the company is supposed to be a dog but it looks weird lol

001-A03:

MC visits the flower guy, Hachinoya Nagi, at Flower Laundry, to buy some flowers for the company's opening. Nagi gives her a rose as a bonus...and puts a happiness spell on it?? Like, he literally glowed. Do people have powers in this world or is it just him?

Oh, the company is the building they used to look at the view in the prologue!

A Kamina Yukikaze texts MC saying they look forward to seeing them. 🤔

While taking shelter from the rain, MC sees a man standing in it.

It's that Nishizono Renga guy from the airport... He looks like he just came from a funeral. He took MC's rose. He's one of the tourism district's heads.

001-A04:

Oh, Daniel is working there now too! Aw that's nice, they'll have a friend to work with. He's department head.

Head of accounting is Kitakata Nayuki, a friend Kafka made in the investment world. Where did Kafka find the time to meet all these people? He was stuck in a hospital room!

Nayuki launched the largest metaverse, mahorova as COO at 12?!. If that's like VR, maybe they met there?

The last founder is a guy with a weird voice. LMAO Sakujiro is hilarious. The clumsy guy's name is Fuefuki Yachiyo.

There's a mascot dog name Shuumai. MC found him injured near the hospital and Kafka took him in.

MC is so oblivious, maybe willfully so, Kafra might seem like he's playing around but he really means those flirts towards the MC.

001-A05:

So there was a tourism boom when machines took over jobs? I assume people got paid still and that's how they could afford travel...

Tourist areas can get support from the national government but are placed under strict supervision of the 23 wards. The one who oversees their area is the mayor of Tokyo's 8th ward aka Shigematsu Hakkei, the guy who was at the inauguration ceremony.

HAMA's decline happened because there were too many visitors and the quality declined. HAMA has 18 districts but only 3 have district heads, they're focusing on those first. The four outside of Kafka and MC will be 'conductors', supporting the 18 districts divided into four pieces of the board.

Things are definitely getting interesting, I suppose we'll meet all the district heads again soon.

Today I'm going to do some solid editing along with some chores. In the evening, I'll most likely play all of the video games. All of them. I'm a bit behind on a number of them, so this is what I need to get back on track.

Editing is the creative priority today. I'm also going to start the process of organizing a panel of sorts for my upcoming project. I'm trying to be as on top of things as possible. It will also help me with being accountable. I need accountability. Badly.

Currently:
Playing: "Final Fantasy VI". "Death Stranding". "Octopath Traveler: Zero". "Cat Quest II". "Vision Of Mana".
Reading: "The Witching Hour" audio. "The Drawing of Three" print. "Saga Collection 1" ebook. "Uncanny XMen 1" print.

One Pace is a fan project that recuts the One Piece anime in an endeavor to bring it more in line with the pacing of the original manga by Eiichiro Oda. The team accomplishes this by removing filler scenes not present in the source material. This process requires meticulous editing and quality control to ensure seamless music and transitions.

The project is an ongoing labor of love that started in 2013. Recently, its scope has expanded to include high-quality subtitles for multiple languages, the English dub, animation error fixes, and much more. In addition, we hope to provide a standard middle ground between the anime's presentation and manga's story-telling for fans looking for an alternative watching experience.

The front door to the building lets you dial a flat number to call a flat to be let in.
Simples.
Yet:
There are people who will get the 'you have dialled an incorrect number' message
and phone someone to say the door isn't working
rather than imagine
they are dialling
the wrong building.

There is an entire street, go try the other stairs, they have their numbers written on them, why is this conceptually difficult so often???

Glad to have finally reached the weekend! No particular plans but I am hoping to put the finishing touches on my tidying up, get a letter written, do some crochet and maybe finish one of the books I'm reading. I have homework to finish for my personal curriculum too. Pretty sure I'm going to the library tomorrow with my sister and niblings but that isn't going to be an all-day thing.

The Yarnia subscription yarn last month was a pretty, muted green and I was inspired as soon as it was in my hand. I've been sitting on a purple subscription skein for months because I couldn't put my finger on what I wanted to do with it and it looks so nice with the green. I'm going to use the two of them to make a tulip stitch bag :D I'll need to dig through my fabric scraps for something to line it with but I can worry about that later. I haven't been this excited to start a project for a minute, which feels a little silly when it's something so basic but I'll take it.

I really need to write back to my prison penpal. I've been procrastinating and I feel awful about it. I got several letters from him at once after a mail delay and so reading and responding to all that just felt overwhelming, I guess. I mailed off a short letter earlier this week so he'd know I had received his and hadn't forgotten him and would write properly soon. I might try to sketch or paint something to include as well, since he's sent me artwork before.

Reading has been slow going this month. I'm working my way through two books I didn't get around to last month, one on Mary Queen of Scots and one on Queen Elizabeth I. As you might imagine, they are each treated as very different "characters" in either book, lol. They're both kinda slow-- or at least I'm not finding them very engaging-- but I really want to get done so that I can move on to what's next in my pile.

As for my curriculum, I kinda. forgot. that I had assigned myself an essay for Clarinet, lol. At least it was always meant to be a short one. I'm gonna flip through my exercise book for inspo since it has a bunch of little informational tidbits and probably pick whatever the first thing is that looks interesting enough. I plan to write the essay out by hand but I might type it up and post it here too. We'll see! I also need to put the finishing touches on this week's transposition work, come to think of it.

April Question a Day memage:

11. Have you ever flown a kite?

Yes. When I was a kid - which was sometime in the 1970s?

12. What’s your favourite breed of dog?

I am partial to spaniels, but also adore collies.

13. Have you ever volunteered to do something long-term?

Yes. I worked with the Legal Aid Association of Western Missouri and the Domestic Violence Coalition as a volunteer for about a year or well over in the 1990s. And, volunteered with a social justice organization in my church for about two-three years.

14. It’s International Laverbread Day. Have you ever tried it?

No. (Per the youtube link, it is essentially seaweed turned into a kind of a paste. Richard Burton called it the Welsh Cavier.) The Wiki link wouldn't come up for some reason, instead I got an AI description and well the youtube link on what it is. They call it laverbread - because they knead the seaweed, and to eat it - mix it with oatmeal and use bacon grease to make it into cakes.

The youtube link is kind of fun and informative - it's an Asian woman trying Welsh Laverbread and showing how to make it. I enjoyed it more than reading a Wiki entry.

15. Leonardo Da Vinci was born today in 1452. What comes to mind when you think of Leonardo? Have you ever seen one of his works?

Mona Lisa, also The Anatomical Jesus and the Last Supper. Or the Da Vinci Code - which my parents thrust on me when I visited them in the early 00s.

16. In 1922, Annie Oakley set a women's record by breaking 100 clay targets in a row. Have you ever been clay pigeon shooting?

No.

17. Have you ever seen bats flying in your area? Have you ever seen a bat up close or seen a bat house attached to a tree?

Yes. Fruit Bats are rather common on the East Coast. And when I was a kid in West Chester, Pa - I saw them all the time.

***

Having quite a bit of down-time at work (albeit not nearly as much as many television actors and retail employees do, or flagmen for that matter), I listened to actor podcasts while playing with a spreadsheet.

It's a trend now. Actor podcasts. Not everyone has them. Just the struggling actors who require side-hustles. And considering there's a 99% unemployment rate in professional acting? There's a lot of actors hunting side-hustles.

The podcasts range from:

1. actors re-watching the television shows they were in over 20 years ago, and somehow never got around to watching until now. Read more... )

Charisma's Bitch is Back much like Landau's Revamped and Sackoff's podcasts, have interviews with lots of old cast mates and friends. Charisma did one with Seth Green - and they discuss trying out varieties of psychedelic drugs. Read more... )

Seth does explain why he had issues with Buffy. Even though, generally speaking, he enjoyed the experience and appreciated working with Joss - and had known Joss, Sarah and Hannigan for a long time. He grew up with Sarah and Aly. Also Green was in the original Buffy film - his scene was cut. He played a vampire with bad teeth. Green and Charisma's difficulties on Buffy )

2. Actors interviewing other actors (usually their friends and fellow cast mates - ie. other struggling actors)

* Michael Rosenbloom does "Inside of You" - he's a good interviewer but the ad breaks are annoying. He knows a lot of people - so he has a good range of guests on his series, and he gets a lot of information from them. He also talks a lot about mental illness and therapy on his series. And how difficult it is to work in the business and get work.

I listened to one with Jensen Ackles (Supernatural, The Boys, etc) - which was interesting. Read more... )

Others are:

Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner - Dropping Names (a fun one is where they invite Alan Tyduke and Nathan Fillon over, who in turn pimp their podcast Once We Were Spacemen).

Alan Tyduke and Nathan Fillon - Once We Were Spacemen (which is mostly them riffing)

Maurice Bernard - State of Mind (has a lot of soap actors, along with other celebrities of sports, music and acting) - discusses mental illness (take away? An alarming number of soap opera actors have bi-polar disease.)

Katee Sack-Off - she interviews a lot of folks prior to doing the rewatch

James Marsters and Mark Devine - Schmactors, and VidIdiots

There are more, obviously, I just don't feel like rambling all of them off?
When I say it's the latest trend - I'm not exaggerating. Actors have a lot of side hustles. They kind of have to? Acting is a difficult profession to make a living in.

GenCon planning is underway. Signed this year's team contract just now, and some Battletech games are in the offing, and the latter should give me some initiative to get some paint on the Gray Plastic Regiment. A little over a hundred days until Indy. Crazy.

Went to another Bats game last night. Took my brother and his family to the game. Bats were playing as the Mashers - yay for Minor League baseball - and they got whupped by the Mud Hens. I guess some payback was in order - Louisville had put up 27 runs on Toledo in the first two games of the series, so a 5-10 loss didn't sting as badly as it could have. We had a good time, and will probably do this again sometime this season.

Tomorrow is Thunder Over Louisville. I saw a few planes making practice runs over downtown today, and that is about as close to the event as I'm going to get. I will happily plant myself on the couch and watch WLKY's coverage and not deal with 600K people packing downtown.

"This is a good luck rock," the toddler informed the stranger solemnly, heedless of the amused smiles of the adults overhead, and graciously placed a small, roundish pebble in the palm of a much larger hand. Much to the stranger's surprise, after forgetting the pebble in her pocket, it did prove to be good luck, coinciding with several fortunate turns until she didn't like to do anything important without it tucked away somewhere on her person. Unbeknownst to the many recipients of the child's proffered trinkets, he was a young incarnation of a minor luck god, and even the most humble of objects became blessed tokens in his plump and generous hands.

Whippee I didn't expect to make this post so soon, but I just wanted to say my fictional idol/music fandom comm [community profile] fictionalidols is finally public! I tried to make a dw comm for a specific small fandom before which was...an experience, so I thought I'd make something a bit more general this time. I'm gonna be busy today so I probably won't get around to promoting it until later, but I definitely needed to post about it here at least. I'm also gonna have a whole week off before I do any events or other admin stuff (unless it's important) just to prepare myself.

So yeah, go my children and play in the idolpen!
