The front door to the building lets you dial a flat number to call a flat to be let in.
Simples.
Yet:
There are people who will get the 'you have dialled an incorrect number' message
and phone someone to say the door isn't working
rather than imagine
they are dialling
the wrong building.

There is an entire street, go try the other stairs, they have their numbers written on them, why is this conceptually difficult so often???

Glad to have finally reached the weekend! No particular plans but I am hoping to put the finishing touches on my tidying up, get a letter written, do some crochet and maybe finish one of the books I'm reading. I have homework to finish for my personal curriculum too. Pretty sure I'm going to the library tomorrow with my sister and niblings but that isn't going to be an all-day thing.

The Yarnia subscription yarn last month was a pretty, muted green and I was inspired as soon as it was in my hand. I've been sitting on a purple subscription skein for months because I couldn't put my finger on what I wanted to do with it and it looks so nice with the green. I'm going to use the two of them to make a tulip stitch bag :D I'll need to dig through my fabric scraps for something to line it with but I can worry about that later. I haven't been this excited to start a project for a minute, which feels a little silly when it's something so basic but I'll take it.

I really need to write back to my prison penpal. I've been procrastinating and I feel awful about it. I got several letters from him at once after a mail delay and so reading and responding to all that just felt overwhelming, I guess. I mailed off a short letter earlier this week so he'd know I had received his and hadn't forgotten him and would write properly soon. I might try to sketch or paint something to include as well, since he's sent me artwork before.

Reading has been slow going this month. I'm working my way through two books I didn't get around to last month, one on Mary Queen of Scots and one on Queen Elizabeth I. As you might imagine, they are each treated as very different "characters" in either book, lol. They're both kinda slow-- or at least I'm not finding them very engaging-- but I really want to get done so that I can move on to what's next in my pile.

As for my curriculum, I kinda. forgot. that I had assigned myself an essay for Clarinet, lol. At least it was always meant to be a short one. I'm gonna flip through my exercise book for inspo since it has a bunch of little informational tidbits and probably pick whatever the first thing is that looks interesting enough. I plan to write the essay out by hand but I might type it up and post it here too. We'll see! I also need to put the finishing touches on this week's transposition work, come to think of it.

April Question a Day memage:

11. Have you ever flown a kite?

Yes. When I was a kid - which was sometime in the 1970s?

12. What’s your favourite breed of dog?

I am partial to spaniels, but also adore collies.

13. Have you ever volunteered to do something long-term?

Yes. I worked with the Legal Aid Association of Western Missouri and the Domestic Violence Coalition as a volunteer for about a year or well over in the 1990s. And, volunteered with a social justice organization in my church for about two-three years.

14. It’s International Laverbread Day. Have you ever tried it?

No. (Per the youtube link, it is essentially seaweed turned into a kind of a paste. Richard Burton called it the Welsh Cavier.) The Wiki link wouldn't come up for some reason, instead I got an AI description and well the youtube link on what it is. They call it laverbread - because they knead the seaweed, and to eat it - mix it with oatmeal and use bacon grease to make it into cakes.

The youtube link is kind of fun and informative - it's an Asian woman trying Welsh Laverbread and showing how to make it. I enjoyed it more than reading a Wiki entry.

15. Leonardo Da Vinci was born today in 1452. What comes to mind when you think of Leonardo? Have you ever seen one of his works?

Mona Lisa, also The Anatomical Jesus and the Last Supper. Or the Da Vinci Code - which my parents thrust on me when I visited them in the early 00s.

16. In 1922, Annie Oakley set a women's record by breaking 100 clay targets in a row. Have you ever been clay pigeon shooting?

No.

17. Have you ever seen bats flying in your area? Have you ever seen a bat up close or seen a bat house attached to a tree?

Yes. Fruit Bats are rather common on the East Coast. And when I was a kid in West Chester, Pa - I saw them all the time.

***

Having quite a bit of down-time at work (albeit not nearly as much as many television actors and retail employees do, or flagmen for that matter), I listened to actor podcasts while playing with a spreadsheet.

It's a trend now. Actor podcasts. Not everyone has them. Just the struggling actors who require side-hustles. And considering there's a 99% unemployment rate in professional acting? There's a lot of actors hunting side-hustles.

The podcasts range from:

1. actors re-watching the television shows they were in over 20 years ago, and somehow never got around to watching until now. Read more... )

Charisma's Bitch is Back much like Landau's Revamped and Sackoff's podcasts, have interviews with lots of old cast mates and friends. Charisma did one with Seth Green - and they discuss trying out varieties of psychedelic drugs. Read more... )

Seth does explain why he had issues with Buffy. Even though, generally speaking, he enjoyed the experience and appreciated working with Joss - and had known Joss, Sarah and Hannigan for a long time. He grew up with Sarah and Aly. Also Green was in the original Buffy film - his scene was cut. He played a vampire with bad teeth. Green and Charisma's difficulties on Buffy )

2. Actors interviewing other actors (usually their friends and fellow cast mates - ie. other struggling actors)

* Michael Rosenbloom does "Inside of You" - he's a good interviewer but the ad breaks are annoying. He knows a lot of people - so he has a good range of guests on his series, and he gets a lot of information from them. He also talks a lot about mental illness and therapy on his series. And how difficult it is to work in the business and get work.

I listened to one with Jensen Ackles (Supernatural, The Boys, etc) - which was interesting. Read more... )

Others are:

Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner - Dropping Names (a fun one is where they invite Alan Tyduke and Nathan Fillon over, who in turn pimp their podcast Once We Were Spacemen).

Alan Tyduke and Nathan Fillon - Once We Were Spacemen (which is mostly them riffing)

Maurice Bernard - State of Mind (has a lot of soap actors, along with other celebrities of sports, music and acting) - discusses mental illness (take away? An alarming number of soap opera actors have bi-polar disease.)

Katee Sack-Off - she interviews a lot of folks prior to doing the rewatch

James Marsters and Mark Devine - Schmactors, and VidIdiots

There are more, obviously, I just don't feel like rambling all of them off?
When I say it's the latest trend - I'm not exaggerating. Actors have a lot of side hustles. They kind of have to? Acting is a difficult profession to make a living in.

GenCon planning is underway. Signed this year's team contract just now, and some Battletech games are in the offing, and the latter should give me some initiative to get some paint on the Gray Plastic Regiment. A little over a hundred days until Indy. Crazy.

Went to another Bats game last night. Took my brother and his family to the game. Bats were playing as the Mashers - yay for Minor League baseball - and they got whupped by the Mud Hens. I guess some payback was in order - Louisville had put up 27 runs on Toledo in the first two games of the series, so a 5-10 loss didn't sting as badly as it could have. We had a good time, and will probably do this again sometime this season.

Tomorrow is Thunder Over Louisville. I saw a few planes making practice runs over downtown today, and that is about as close to the event as I'm going to get. I will happily plant myself on the couch and watch WLKY's coverage and not deal with 600K people packing downtown.

"This is a good luck rock," the toddler informed the stranger solemnly, heedless of the amused smiles of the adults overhead, and graciously placed a small, roundish pebble in the palm of a much larger hand. Much to the stranger's surprise, after forgetting the pebble in her pocket, it did prove to be good luck, coinciding with several fortunate turns until she didn't like to do anything important without it tucked away somewhere on her person. Unbeknownst to the many recipients of the child's proffered trinkets, he was a young incarnation of a minor luck god, and even the most humble of objects became blessed tokens in his plump and generous hands.

This one was good by Law & Order standards, in that while the dialogue and acting were quite bad* and I called the murderer almost immediately, it actually performed a socially useful function.

However, it deals with infanticide and I'm putting everything under a cut.

Whippee I didn't expect to make this post so soon, but I just wanted to say my fictional idol/music fandom comm [community profile] fictionalidols is finally public! I tried to make a dw comm for a specific small fandom before which was...an experience, so I thought I'd make something a bit more general this time. I'm gonna be busy today so I probably won't get around to promoting it until later, but I definitely needed to post about it here at least. I'm also gonna have a whole week off before I do any events or other admin stuff (unless it's important) just to prepare myself.

So yeah, go my children and play in the idolpen!

When I was putting together this list of Canadian songs I love from the last fifty years, some years had a clear favourite jump out at me while others had too many bangers to choose between. (Seriously, 1993 turned out to be the keystone year whose ultimate selection affected everything from 1987 to 2001.) But 1986 was the first stumper.

I don't think it's the case that 1986 was a mid year for Canadian music. It's more likely that it's just the first year I was properly conscious of music, with the releases getting replayed throughout my early childhood until they became background noise. These are third-favourite albums from artists whose later eras hit stronger for me, songs I slept through during my first concert as a toddler, and snippets from radio bumpers that earworm me to this day.

So, without a stronger personal preference, the clear choice was the Canadian song of 1986. The one that everyone loved and then became so inescapable that everyone hated it, and which is probably on schedule for a revival soon if it gets used in the right commercial or CBC show. However you feel about it, it's hard to find something more Canadian than this.

Today I spent all day sitting in the living room
waiting on a delivery
which turned out to arrive tidily in the predicted time slot
but once Waiting Mode is activated it does not go away easily.

I have many Books now :-D

But in preparation for one of the many books I started rereading Wayward Children from the beginning, so I will be a couple more days before I get to the new one...

the reading is why it has been a quiet week here
lots of rereading, no pressing need to re review, so I was quiet.

I still want to start doing an output sort of a thing, a story or something, but still pondering that.

... I keep getting stuck on practicalities, like, there is a Mysterious Castle and a team of people from half a dozen canons are now Shut In The Castle...
... how much Mysterious Loo Roll do they need and how can we get it in the Castle without the mist eating it...

and there is a time and a place for that but I feel it is just turning a plot bunny into a shopping list
which really gets in the way of the porn.

bunnies will return eventually.

... *sigh* ...

I have finished Bdubs's Hermitcraft season 10, and caught up with his Hermitcraft season 11! He is such an inspiration to me as a builder, he's just incredible. I just started watching Welsknight's season 10, I'm trying him out and so far he's fun, nice and laid back and chill! I really like building in a somewhat medieval style, so I'm hoping that his builds also inspire me, especially if his building style is more... accessible? than Bdubs? Like Bdubs' builds are amazing, but it feels so intimidating to try and imitate. They're beautiful, but it's just easier for me to steal from less detailed and intricate builds haha. Or maybe it's more that the medieval style comes more naturally to me, so it's easier? We'll see, I guess. But yeah, Bdubs' builds in season 10 were incredible, I loved his terraforming and how atmospheric and immersive his builds always are.

I'm super excited to play on the Hermitcraft s10 world download! I'm a little intimidated by the Hermitcraft world downloads in general to be honest, because they have a fair amount of data and resource packs, but I am determined to play Decked Out 2 eventually. I also want to wander the worlds that the hermits built, and experience it all. I recently realized that while I really enjoy watching Hermitcraft, I've lost interest in reading or writing fic for the fandom. But, what I do want to do, is to draw fanart! Except I don't want to draw the cubitos, I want to draw landscapes and the hermits' builds. So I'm excited to explore the world downloads and look for good scenes and angles and bits to draw.

Regarding playing Minecraft itself, I ended up getting frustrated in my creative world, I think because I tried to go too big too soon. But I don't really have very many ideas for smaller things, so it's tricky. I did start a new survival world, though. Not large biomes this time, and I made sure to get a spawn that had a lot of plains biomes because that's what I'd like to mainly build in right now, and I don't want to have to travel very far from spawn to get to where my main base is. But I haven't finished my starter base yet, mainly because I realized that the block I wanted to use for the walls on top of the chiseled tuff brick foundation, would be moss, and I don't have any lush caves super nearby. So I'm going to have to go on a resource gathering journey for all of the saplings. It's tricky trying to build without having access to all of the wood types! But I think the biomes are close enough by and connected by water that I can just take a chest boat and get most, if not all, of what I need. I'm not sure what I'm going to do for the roof-- maybe spruce? But the base is chiseled tuff bricks, and then it'll be like mossy walls. I'll post some screenshots when I have it done! Or when I have enough progress that it's more than just a rectangle outline of chiseled tuff bricks on the ground.

I was working during most of the Hermitcraft charity stream, but I was able to donate a little bit! I donated to enter a question for the Hermit Q&A, but I haven't been able to find a VOD of the Q&A to see if my question was asked (it was about build styles anyone hasn't built in yet but that they wanted to). I also participated in the auction, mainly trying to get the Lizzie Life Series pin, but unfortunately I got outbid and didn't have it in my budget to go higher.

Anyways that's mostly what I've been doing lately fandom-wise! I expect to get back to watching Naruto Shippuden and other anime once I'm done watching Welsknight's Hermitcraft season 10.

My Wolverine back issues have started coming in, which is nice.

I just wish I was buying them from a comic store rather than online. Partly because you can't really be certain of their quality before they arrive, and partly because I just really miss rifling through the stacks. The feel and the smell. (And also the comic store) But no comic store means no stacks so I'll take what I can get.

The ones I'm buying are parts lost in the flood and partly never had in the first place. I stopped reading Wolverine once Origins killed what I'd loved about the character, but up til then, I was all about Wolvie. Probably for reasons it's best not to look too closely at.

But, still, a couple of issues closer to that full vol 2 run. Vol 1 can wait until I win the lottery.

It’s the end of the semester, and I’m running on fumes. The absurdity of the current worldstate isn’t helping. Still, I’m going to make a serious effort to vent less and be more chill and normal going forward. I set up my Wii U to play Wind Waker, and hopefully spending some relaxing time on the Great Sea will help. But I won’t lie, a productive eight-hour workday with a Death Note would help more.
