Beaumont Stairs in Chelsea have been my go to place when I want somewhere quiet, where I'm definitely not going to be bothered by tourists, and there probably won't be any other mudlarks.

I saw the remains of trees that once grew here and it amazes me that they are still here. The bus stop was also still on the foreshore. I thought once it was gone, but no.

After the tide had turned, I walked along, wondering if I could find the Saxon fish trap. I had seen a picture of it near some boats. I couldn't see any way down to the foreshore near the boats though. I think the tide was just too high on this day to see it. I walked on and found myself in Cremorne Gardens which used to be pleasure gardens from 1845 to 1877. They have saved the grand gate and it's in the little park there still. There used to be all kinds of entertainment there - from tight-rope walkers across the Thames, to hot air balloon rides, fireworks, dances, a marionette theatre, and so on.

Further on and I could see a mudlark on the foreshore but I couldn't work out where steps were to get there. There looked like there was a range of stuff down there.

Mudlarking finds - 104.1

Finds:
A piece of an Express Dairies milk bottle
A piece of a bottle that says Wells on it

Two patterned pipe stems - one looks to say “d market” on it and “nny” on the other side.

An original vulcanite bottle stopper from Barrett & Elers.

Part of a Hartley’s jam jar

A few pieces of mocha ware

A nice piece of Staffordshire style combed slipware

A chunky glass stem. I have another of these and liked to imagine it might once have been part of a penny lick.

Mudlarking finds - 104.2

A Bourne & Son stoneware base
A Doulton Lambeth stoneware base

A saucer shaped like a teapot, which I think is modern

A plate with a diamond mark - this shows the plate was made on 6th April 1868.

Mudlarking finds - 104.3

A toothbrush, missing the handle, made of bone.

Keys, attached to a Lego keyring.

(You need a permit to search or mudlark on the Thames foreshore.)

Marinating I guess?

Local gal shirks responsibility of classwork to continue to fuss with HTML and CSS learning.

I got myself into a bit of a funk I really need to wiggle my way back out of it, I'm just not sure how. I feel like my best bet is to ride whatever wave I'm feeling right now and get important tasks in order (laundry, school assignments). I'm definitely stressing a little bit but I know I've made it work in the past, I just want to stop relying on this fight or flight to make deadlines response I've been leaning on for years. I shudder to think how many grey hairs I could have spared myself.

I do feel like I've just been really lazy versus it being normal executive dysfunction. Although I'm really starting to wonder how much the weather is messing with me. We got confirmation that humidity is basically not being cycled out of the rooms for most of the year I feel abysmal during peak daylight hours in my current room. Plus it wouldn't be the first time I've had a living situation completely sap all my strength because of the weather and formerly untreated health issues. Hopefully, though it's just a matter of sleeping regularly because I can do it for a week and feel phenomenal, then I just eat shit and its back to old habits.

Outside of that I've been listening to more new music and thinking about shows I really love. I started a decent amount of books and some manga re-reads, just getting my brain to stick with it. I also have some RPGs in progress, however I have just not had the energy to boot up any of them.

One show I've been thinking about a lot is Elementary. I just finished re-watching the first season again with a friend of mine and I have a lot of thoughts about it. It's crazy that the show is over a decade old now because it still feels very relevant. Even if certain elements date it, it makes insanely good cultural commentary on many topics in the US. I thought I might tack it on here, but my thoughts on the Season 1 finale really deserve their own post because it's nuts how tight and satisfying that seasons story and direction were.

Well it's almost four in the morning for me so I'm going to go ride the wave like I said and shuffle laundry around and hopefully get some of my stuff re-organized.

Willow watches them dance; more accurately, watches her dance.

She’s a dark beacon, a bewitching spectacle. Her energy pulls them in, men and boys flocking towards her and lavishing her with their attention; attention she enjoys and feels entitled to, a proud large feline in her place of honor in the couch, but that she doesn’t hold in high esteem, doesn’t need.

Willow feels envious. Willow feels… lacking. Much later, she’ll realize it’s only the attention of her light counterpart that Faith demands and craves and screams for. A hungry void, a demanding black hole, not too different from herself.

so i finally learned how tagging with a colon works on here! lol

heres what all i did:
  • removed "games" tag, added "game:" before relevant tags (ex. game: kirby)
  • the above with "my art", "oc", "character", etc
  • removed tags of characters im not invested in (ex. astarion, i dont really think about him. nor is he up there in fave bg3 characters, so i wont post about him much if ever again)
I believe that summarizes it! now my tags page looks ~Nice and Organized~ <3

as for personal updates, this week urgent care did malpractice against me then i was in the ER 2 days later (seems i recently passed a kidney stone, the Actually Good doctor said. urgent care was awfulll but ive dealt with worse doctors before). Ended up spending a lot more of the day than expected with my sister and the kids. We didn't even go to the library! Turned out the kids weren't ready to give up the books they'd checked out, lol. Instead, we had lunch, made sock puppets, went to the store and then had dinner. Unexpected and kiiinda inconvenient but still fun.

Maurice calls the hospital so he can tell Angie Upton that they took her cat
Angie cries thinking about how helpless she is to take care of her own animals

"We need to tell that lady we stole her cat," Maurice tells Jon as they walk together in jackets, hats, and scarves. He wants Jon to do it for him, but Jon only retorts, "You know how to use a phone."

Maurice calls the hospital. "Hi, I want to talk to Angie Upton? No, I'm not family. Maurice Arzamastsev. Arza... no, Maurice. A, R, Z... Z! A... tell her it's the horse guy."

He finally gets to talk to her, and she asks her to come in person.

"My poor baby." Ms. Upton's eyes tear up. It must be hard to cry while immobilized in bed in an industrial-sized neck brace. She doesn't move her hands at all, either. They sit limply on her lap across several panels. Finally, Maurice reaches over and puts his hand on hers to comfort her.

I need to tell you all the story of Typhoon's early-life medical escapades. Not right now. It's nearly midnight and I didn't mean to stay up this late. It's below freezing again tonight and I'm annoyed. I tried to keep the windows open as long as I could, but the cold snap won. It's going to be a long one. Check back with me in a week to see if Real Spring has arrived.

Used my manga TBR boardgame.

I read 20/21 on my last board in one week and honestly it wasn't too much of a struggle, I did end up only reading mostly one chapter for non-BL again though. There were some really enjoyable things in this batch. ☺️ I don't know if it's any more efficient than smaller batches at a time, maybe I should try and keep it around 15 this time.

The Wind Waker

The Wind Waker is a marvelous game. A miraculous work of art. A blessing directly from heaven. A beautiful shining treasure on this earth.

I haven’t gotten to the relaxing part (the sailing) yet, but that’s okay. I always forget what an incredible charm offensive the opening hour of the game is, and I’m always delighted.

I love how, when Link is leaving Outset Island, the music crescendos into a heroic swell as he waves goodbye to everyone on the island from the stern of a pirate ship – but just when the song is about to reach its climax and transition into the classic Legend of Zelda theme, it crashes to a halt when Tetra is like, “Are you fucking done?” I love her so much, and also. That’s thematic foreshadowing babeyyyy.

I also somehow managed to forget how cool the first encounter with Ganondorf is. I love the way his face distorts into the most bitter and unhinged smile, and the way he ever-so-slightly twists his chin to signal the Helmaroc King (his giant pet murder bird) to release Link back into the ocean. Ganondorf covets that wind, and I covet... his magnificent bone structure...

Happy day 1,200!!! Today I have for you...

The World is to Dig (2026)

Oh, how I've missed you, John and John. I was excited for this since "Wu-Tang" dropped, and it's nowhere near the best track on here. "Slow" is trippy as hell and I love it "Sleep's Older Sister" is a nice callback to Join Us, and it might imply that a character from an old song is transgender?? Hype. "New Wave Will Never Die" is just true.

I don't have much else to say, it's just a really good album.

9/10

Favorite Tracks: Sleep's Older Sister, New Wave Will Never Die, Slow

Least Favorite Tracks: Telescope, In The Dead Mall

-ANYWAYS...-

My friend Liz released an album today, called I Am Screaming in a Cube!

It's not the kind of stuff I usually listen to, but I thought it was pretty good. 8/10.

The next Barbenheimer perhaps? The Cube is to Scream?

Here Come the ABCs (2005)

This is the first of 3 albums released under Walt Disney Records. Like the other kids’ albums, this one also has non-John vocals. “Letter / Not a Letter” features John Linnell’s son Henry and a friend doing voice-overs, reminiscent of Sesame Street. “Alphabet Lost and Found” is sung by Marty Beller, with John Flansburgh doing the spoken parts. “Who Put the Alphabet in Alphabetical Order?” is sung by Robin Goldwasser.

All three Here Come albums have accompanying DVDs. I didn’t watch them, and they might’ve enhanced my experience. Sorry about that.

Again, it’s a decent kids’ album, but obviously not really my thing. I loved “Alphabet of Nations” of course, it appeals to the geography nerd in me.

Maybe I’ll watch the DVD though. Sorry.

6/10

Favorite Tracks: Alphabet of Nations

Least Favorite Tracks: The Vowel Family, Goodnight My Friends

Here Come the 123s (2008)

I love “I Never Go To Work” so much. I love how they managed to put a song about hating work on a kids’ album too. They just couldn’t resist lol. Anyways, uhh this has the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme song as well as “Hot Dog” lol. So that’s cool.

“Triops Has Three Eyes” features vocals from Robin Goldwasser along with the Johns. She’s also on “The Secret Life of Six” and “Ten Mississippi.” “High Five” is sung by Marty Beller along with Hannah Levine. Hannah appears on many other songs on this album. Mainly “One Dozen Monkeys” but she’s also in “Zeroes” “I Can Add” and “Ooh La! Ooh La!” She is the niece of Dan Levine, who occasionally plays trombone for TMBG.

Henry Linnell and Desi Tomaselli come back to voice the sevens in “Seven.” “Infinity” is sung by Dan Miller, but it’s the only song that does not have a music video.

Also need to mention the music video for “Figure Eight” was made by The Brothers Chaps. It’s not Homestar Runner related like “Experimental Film” but it’s cool.

6/10

Favorite Tracks: I Never Go To Work, Nonagon

Least Favorite Tracks: Nine Bowls of Soup, Even Numbers

Here Comes Science (2009)

This album was my introduction to They Might Be Giants. I believe I would’ve been about seven years old and I found their songs on YouTube and I was intrigued by the band name. Little did I know many years later they would end up becoming my favorite band. The only songs I remember sticking out to me when I was a kid were “Roy G. Biv” and “Meet The Elements.” I would listen to those two a lot.

Of course, “I Am A Paleontologist” has Danny Weinkauf singing, and according to a Mini Page blurb, “is used in museum exhibits around the world.” “The Bloodmobile” has Robin Goldwasser on guest vocals, and was written for Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute Science Museum. “Electric Car” also has Robin singing. “Speed and Velocity” has Marty Beller.

This is probably my favorite of the kids’ albums. Maybe because it was a significant part of my childhood. It’s nice!!! Also the way the Johns are drawn in the music videos is iconic in tmbg fanart.

7/10

Favorite Tracks: Meet The Elements, I Am A Paleontologist, Why Does the Sun Shine?, Why Does the Sun Really Shine?

Least Favorite Tracks: Solid Liquid Gas

Glean (2015)

I ended up liking this album on this listen more than I thought I would. “Let Me Tell You About My Operation” “Unpronounceable” and “Erase” are obviously my favorites, but “Music Jail” is an underrated fav of mine too.

“Aaa” and “Answer” are of course great. I have the latter stuck in my head right now, actually.

“Underwater Woman” and “Good To Be Alive” are a lot better than I remember too. "Hate The Villanelle" is a bit of a lowlight though in my opinion. "All The Lazy Boyfriends" and "End of the Rope" are also kinda whatever to me.

The album cover is kinda weird though, not a fan of that.

9/10

Favorite Tracks: Erase, Music Jail, Unpronounceable, Let Me Tell You About My Operation

Least Favorite Tracks: Hate The Villanelle

Why? (2015)

Yeah I just genuinely don’t like this one very much. Sorry.

“Walking My Cat Named Dog” and “Hello Mrs. Wheelyke” are good though.

“Oh You Did” and “Long White Beard” have Robin Goldwasser singing. “Elephants” is a Danny Weinkauf song. I like the album cover at least.

5/10

Favorite Tracks: Walking My Cat Named Dog, Hello Mrs. Wheelyke

Least Favorite Tracks: I Made A Mess, I Just Want To Dance

The Escape Team (2018)

I don’t really like this album. “Dunkin of Course of Course” might honestly be my least favorite TMBG song. I’m not a big fan of “John Postal” “Burnice” and “Chip the CHiP” either. The highlights in my opinion are “Mr. Mischief Night” “Dr. Sy Fly” and “The Poisonousness”

4/10

Favorite Tracks: Mr. Mischief Night

Least Favorite Tracks: Chip the CHiP, Burnice, Dunkin of Course of Course, John Postal

my boomer parents are people who would, politely, not be able to sit in the same room with the majority of bsky poasters without several arguments starting (lol)

but i am so thankful, increasingly so the last few months - that without fail they're both champions of critical thinking and real 'own your process/stuff/responsibilities' believers versus outsourcing ... everything. finances, computers, cognitive ability, etc.

just been talking about [current tech events] with them a lot and it's amazing how nuanced/aware of social knock on effects they are once they get to see how the tech works. 'ah, so it can do X kind of graphics that clients are enamored by via these prompts, but the the accuracy of Y, Z is totally off, and struggling to prompt it often takes longer than doing it right to begin with... why would you even bother doing that, then, you have a brain .... '

anyway there's a lot of change and uncertainty out there, also in my personal life right now but just, man. it's just nice to know this is one less Thing not to have to step carefully around in this next phase of life.

Sensitivity Reads

lb_lee: Rogan drawing/writing in a spiral. (art)
[personal profile] lb_lee
Rogan: I like doing sensitivity reads.

I don’t get those jobs super often, and I wouldn’t want them to be my main thing (there’s a reason it’s expensive), but I’ve discovered I really enjoy hearing other people’s ideas and acting as a sounding board to help bring out their best! It makes me happy. The people who hire me bring so much heart and hard work to the table, and they often have really creative ideas that I never would’ve thought of! It’s wonderful when that happens.

There can be a lot of anxiety around sensitivity reading, I think. There’s this image of going to some knowledgeable person who tells you self-righteously how wrong and awful you are. But that’s not how I see it; I see it as a collaboration, me working to help someone do what they’re already doing. We state our hard limits on the webpage, and by the time someone’s gone through all the trouble of reading that, contacting us, and paying me, they’ve taken that into account. (And if they didn’t, it’ll come up long before money’s changed hands.) And if it’s not a hard limit for me, my reaction is generally curiosity and excitement. More multi in the arts! Woo yeah!

I definitely used to be more sanctimonious about this, long before I did this for pay. (Indeed, part of why I CREATED that “hire me” page was, I wanted to stop people from asking me to survey their Jekyll/Hyde murderer multi characters for free. It worked!) But I’ve mellowed as I’ve aged, in large part because I have read enough good multi stuff that I no longer feel that starving urge for Perfection Or Nothing. You don’t need the One Perfect Story when you have a bunch of good enough stories already! I have Paprika, and the Book of Autonomancy, and Mefisto in Onyx, and all the rest of it. I’m no longer culturally starving! (It’s also a nice side effect of Sneak running [community profile] pluralstories.)

I also have more realistic expectations of what fiction can and cannot do in the world. Nobody who has hired me has been a blockbuster creator of the next Sybil. They’re folks who make nice little webcomics or play D&D. They are not responsible for single-handedly removing ableism from our society via the power of story. Come on. They don’t want or need a politically expedient parable of plurality, and neither do I. It’s the friction of our experience and hopes meeting reality that gives stories their charge, that grate of imperfection and frailty that comes with being a being. The agony of the relationships in Pipe Up! make it way more compelling than if the singlet friend was perfectly, utterly accepting right off the bat, or if he was just not worth the emotional investment. But that messiness? Oh man, that messiness makes it POWERFUL.

My job isn’t to remove the mess. It’s to go, “ooooh, you know what would make this mess EVEN STRONGER...”
